Last week, Brisbane City Council announced the reinstatement of the kerbside collection free-service. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the hard waste service would be returned no later than July this year.
In 2020, Cr Schrinner announced that the City Council Kerbside Collection services would be postponed until July 2022 to cut back $13 million after the Council reported a $145 million revenue black hole in its budget.
Subsequently, two petitions for Council to reinstate the Calamvale and Paddington Ward Kerbside Collection were organised. The petitions closed on January 31 this year, with over 6,000 signatures collected overall.
“We paused the kerbside collection last year due to COVID-19, and this continued so we could financially support struggling Brisbane residents, businesses and community groups,” City Standards, Community Health and Safety Chair Kim Marx said.
“We were able to invest the money saved back into initiatives that supported households, small businesses and not-for-profit organisations at a time they needed it most.
“This included freezing rates and waiving $6.5 million in fees for almost 7000 of Brisbane food businesses, directly benefiting cafes, restaurants and food distribution businesses in every suburb across the city.”
