The Bureau of Meteorology in Australia defines drought as an acute water shortage. Farmers may lose a substantial amount of money if their crops are destroyed and their animals suffer from hunger and thirst.

However, a way to soften their sorrowful situation might be found in personal donations. Rural charity Aussie Helpers launched the ‘Make a Farmer’s Christmas Special’ appeal in mid-November aiming to put together 500 hampers.

So far, the organisation have managed to raise more than 1,000 hampers in contributions for drought-stricken farmers in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Instead of hampers, the charity is now, in their own words, is asking Australia to dig deep and donate a Visa gift card via the campaign website, instead. $50, $100 and $500 Christmas VISA cards for farmers can be purchased at aussiehelpers.org.au/christmasappeal

Aussie Helpers CEO Tash Kocks said a Visa gift card would give a struggling family help to buy food, toys and farming supplies such as stock feed.

“I am overwhelmed by the community’s support for this campaign and so grateful to everyone for helping us more than double our hamper target,” Ms Kocks said.

“I want to stress to people that they can still donate by getting online and choosing a Visa gift card to help desperate farmers purchase the essentials they need.

“We hope the cards will be spent in local communities, helping to spread some Christmas cheer to regional businesses too. ”

“This crippling drought has had a profound impact on farming families across the country and there is no relief on the horizon. Let’s dig deep this festive season and help us brighten Christmas for those who really need it.”
